Campy FD Questions

And my three questions are:
* What is the purpose of the plastic piece inserted in the outer cage?

***Campagnolo says it aided in shifting with a 10s chain but I think it was there to prevent wear to
the 'permalink' pins..samo for the newer way to hook the chain together.

* What would happen if I removed it?

***Nothin....

* Should I remove it if I use the FD with, say, Shimano bar-end shifters (where the front is
friction)?

***Doesn't really matter one way or another..not really required, doesn't hurt anything...

It is so that Campy can keep 9/10spd FR Derailleurs in their line up cheaply. The 10spd der is a
9spd with a plastic insert to make the width of the cage narrower so that it can move the narrower
chain. Remove the plastic and you have a 9spd Fr Der.

Altho it is true that a 10s front der has the plastic doohickey and the 9s

does
