Can anyone recommend decent campsites in the Catalonia /
Eastern area (Spanish side)? They seem to be mostly
Caravan/Swimming pool style - and even though we'll mostly
be camping out of the car, I was looking for something a
little less civilised. Any decent guide book
recommendations would be welcome too. Failing that, how
easy is it to wild camp?
Spain has a sort of medieval right-to-roam commonsense
policy. If it's not cultivated, and you can get a car to it
without inconveniencing people or breaking anything, go for
it. Forestry tracks (pistas forestales) are fair game and
are generally accessible in normal cars if you don't mind
the occasional scratch from roadside vegetation. Southern
Europeans often take their 2WD cars to places which Northern
Europeans would find surprising (I'm choosing my words
carefully to avoid offending the residents of an environment
which I find supremely attractive!).
A booklet which covers part of the area you're interested
in is "En Coche por la Montana", ISBN 84-89008-09-04. The
area described is West from Andorra to Vielha, but there
are 8 others in the series. It doesn't tell you where to
camp, just where you can get to, but so long as you have
plenty of water I'd be surprised if you couldn't find
somewhere "a little less civilised" without causing an
international incident.
