I have been researching this on the internet for a few days now, even scouring campags website, to no avail. Problem: I have a proton wheel, with a shimano freewheel. I run campag, so need a campag freewheel. Now i have a Vento rear wheel already and was planning to swap the freewheel from that to the Proton. On trying to swap them over we discovered that the vento freewheel does not fit on the Proton hub body. Apparently the proton hub body is oversized and requires a like freewheel. So does this mean that i have to buy a proton specific freewheel or will a centaur, chorus or record freewheel do the job? The product code for the centaur freewheel is the same as the proton freewheel but i would like some confirmation from someone in the know before i part with my hard earned.
I have also read that campag freewheels are downward compatible (record works with everything) but not upwardly (ie, vento freewheel will only work with vento, etc). Is this true??
I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I am rather curious: WHY did you get the Protons with the incorrect freewheel body?? I also run Campy, and have a set of Protons - bought em with the Campy freewheel from the beginning...why make things so complicated? Well, whatever the reason, here's another solution: get a shimano-splined Campy compatible conversion cassette, this is much easier than trying to retro-fit a new freewheel onto the hub, also. Marchisio, among others, makes em. Not cheap, but probably easier than trying to find the specific freewheel body you are looking for...

I received the rear wheel for free from a mate who was upgrading.
I have considered the cassette option but this would mean shelling out A$150 for each cassette rather than getting the freewheel fixed initially and then spending A$65 for each cassette. It saves money in the long run to get the freewheel changed.

I think you are confusing freewheel with cassette and freewheel wih freehub body. LIfe will be easier when you get out of that morass. Protons were sold as campy or shimano. Therefore, a different proton hub body will interchange.
