Enjoyed an unusual day out on Saturday. I usually try to avoid the crowds but 10 am saw me at the Linn of Dee car park along with about a thousand others preparing ourselves for a stroll up Glen Derry then through to Glenmore via the Lairig an Laoigh. It was a gentle seven hour stroll to do the eighteen miles. Most memorable bit was crossing the Fords of Avon which after all the recent rain was something of a torrent. The MRT had a rope rigged up as a handrail and numerous members on hand to lend a hand to the nervous. I took my boots and socks off, boy that water was cold. At the Refuge the MRT gave us tea, sandwiches and a large Pimms and lemonade. Very civilised. The last couple of hours was wet and windy as forecast but this was forgotten on reaching Glenmore Lodge where all the 'compleaters' were not only presented with a certificate, but also a medal, a minature of Grouse and a huge plate of pasta. Well done the organisers and well done the volunteers who raised more than FIFTY THREE thousand pounds towards funding the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team. Maybe there should be a uk.rec.walking team in for the next event? After all you never know when you too may need them!

Yes it is a very good sum. I believe the money is to be primarily spent on a 4x4 ambulance. I am hoping to go on the next walk in two years. Apart from the money the social side is excellent.
