  1. I was just reading something awhile ago posted back in 2001 on this news group, where everyone was
saying caffeine was a danger, and that it has no stimulant effect...

Do most of the people here belive that? its simply not true.

Caffeine DOES have a proven stimulant effect, and anyone that has had a strong cup of coffee will
know this, also various tests have proven caffeine and alcohol safe, and have been approved in the
UK and many other countrys for public sale.

This may be a bit off topic, flame if you wan't i don't mind, but just interested about how so many
people could of posted before and said that caffeine has no stimulant effect, going against modern
science, (also someone said no more than 200mg of caffeine could be taken-up by the system within 6
hours) thats simply not true either, take 1000mg of caffine and you WILL feel different than if you
took 200mg, and in very high does (would be more than 20 cups of coffee within a 2 hour period) you
can OD from caffeine, although you would have to be trying to OD as the ammount you would have to
    take would be large.

  2. And just for some information on studys and stuff:

A taurine and caffeine-containing drink stimulates cognitive performance and well-being.

    Seidl R, Peyrl A, Nicham R, Hauser E.

Department of Pediatrics, University of Vienna, Austria.

Caffeine- and taurine-containing drinks have been on the European market for about a decade, and
research on the individual constituents of these drinks indicates an improvement in cognitive
performance resulting from consumption of such drinks. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled
study using 10 graduate students, we obtained the P300 components of event-related potential (ERP)
waveforms following an auditory oddball paradigm, measured motor reaction time, and applied the d2
test for the assessment of attention. Status of mood was assessed by the "Basler-
Befindlichkeitsbogen" questionnaire, a standard test for evaluation of feelings of well-being.
Measurements were made at night, prior to and starting one hour after consumption of energy drink
ingredients or placebo. At the end of the experiment (midnight), P300 latency and motor reaction
time were significantly longer compared with baseline measurements in the placebo group, but were
unchanged in the energy drink group. In the test system for evaluating feelings of well-being, total
scores, vitality scores and social extrovertedness scores were significantly decreased in the
placebo group but not in the energy drink group. The findings clearly indicate that the mixture of
three key ingredients of Red Bull Energy Drink used in the study (caffeine, taurine,
glucuronolactone) have positive effects upon human mental performance and mood. These effects may be
mediated by the action of caffeine on purinergic (adenosinergic) receptors and taurine modulation of
receptors. As half of the study cohort were non-caffeine users, the described effects cannot be
explained in terms of the restoration of plasma caffeine levels to normal following caffeine
    withdrawal.

  3. I wonder who paid for the research and whether that influenced the results at all?

Studies do also show though that after several weeks of coffee consumption there is little benefit
as the body adapts to (counteracts) the effect of caffeine.

The moral is: use caffeine rarely, when you really need a boost.

I agree, i posted because i was so suprised at the ammount of people before saying caffeine had
    no effect.

I grew up drinking tea (English style) for breakfast and in the afternooon if I am home, i.e not in
school which would be during summer time.

I had a long holiday after highschool (before startign college because of the way the sa=school
system was set up over there). When I was in college, I would drink tea in the afternoon. I
became so dependent on it that if I didn't get it, I would get headache. At the same time, it
was interfering my sleep. Soon after college at age 21, a doctor told me that I had to quit
because I wasn't sleeping well. I quit immediately though I love tea and was beginning to like
    coffee more than tea.

I am extremely sensitive to caffiene that one time, I drank iced tea continuously for a few days as
I was eating out at lunch time and I noticed that it affected my sleep. I was in grad school and was
already having sleeping problem, obviously from stress.

Now, I am not sure I am that sensitive. My sleep has gotten MUCH better but the other day, not too
long before goign to bed, I opened this Pepsi (can) a friend of mine brought for me (this new friend
stopped by with some food on his way from work unannouced and din't know I don't drink any caffiene)
and drank some becuase I craved the taste though I was concern about the affect. I drank about 1/3
of it and threw the rest away. I didn't notice any differnce that night. But then, Pepsi has a lot
less than in tea or coffee, I would assume.

I am telling you all this because I know someone who drinks coffee just before she goes to bed,
everyday while I have to avoid it completely
