I just returned from hubby's 6-day family reunion in California yesterday.
It was great fun.
I did have, however, a far more limited amount of food choices than I
normally do. Without creating some sort of a scene and making things more
difficult on our gracious host, I decided to simply make good food choices
instead of low carb food choices. (There was not always protein and/or
veggies available at each meal, and that is the staple of what I typically
eat).
I did eat lots of fruit. Peaches everyday (they have a peach tree that
provides the most fantastic peaches in their yard!). Watermelon everyday.
Other melons some days. Strawberries most days. I was using the fruit for
part of breakfast and to eat something while others were having dessert, so
I actually had quite a bit of fruit - probably at least 2 cups every day.
Whenever there were veggies available, I loaded up on them. I also had a
big helping of beans, a little rice, a little mac & cheese, big helping of
gumbo, several slices whole wheat bread (all these foods items were
throughout the week, not in one day). When we went out to eat a couple of
times, I ate very healthy low carb.
There was a big difference in being in California from being at home. We
were outside basically everyday, often for most of the day. The weather was
fantastic. We went to the beach, we went hiking, we swam in their pool at
home, we went to a hilly amusement park and did tons of walking there, etc.
I got more tanned than I can ever remember being, and my brown hair now has
tons of platinum blonde streaks in it from the sun. I added two new
pictures to show this change on my photo album, but on my computer it
doesn't appear to be much of a change. I also got to play Dance Dance
Revolution against my teenage nieces/nephews every day, and they're much
better at it than I am.
Oh, and they also had dessert and sugar snacks available every day.
Candybars, regular soda, homemade brownies, homemade rice crispies, homemade
birthday cake, ice cream, root beer floats, and homemade fruit cobbler were
some of the items that were eaten by all of the people attending the reunion
(except for me - I had none of it!)
I'm quite happy with my food choices and how well I've come to know my body.
I must avoid sugar stuff because that gives me cravings and acne and makes
me feel miserable. So that is what I avoided.
The results: the morning after I returned, I weighed myself and I was 7
pounds lighter than a week earlier when I'd left for California. Not all of
that is from the increased exercise, though. Most of it was just from that
girl time of the month... I'd been at my heaviest monthly weight just before
we left - I was 200, but knew it was temporary. I was hoping to not gain
during the trip and return at 195. Instead, I returned at 193, which is my
lightest weight in about 8 years. So I actually lost 2 pounds during one
week when I was trying to simply maintain my weight.
