C Record chainrings

Yes you can use a 3rd party chainring. I'm currently using a
Stronglight on my record crank. Dealing with the 5th hidden bolt isn't
so much an issue as its finding a chainring that has the proper
chainring roll off pin. Most chainrings are not design for this use. I
believe only Campy, and now Chorus, Stronglight and TA have this
feature. Is it necessary? Hey, if you never drop your chain, who cares?
Seriously, you can probably get away with the roll off pin, so try it
and see.

The main problem I see with Campy is the lack of smaller big
chainrings. Not everyone rides a 52 or 53t big chainring. I like a 48
or 50t max. Finding a Campy one is either impossible or really
expensive. TA rings are excellent, but expensive. I've resorted to
using aftermarket brands that come in 135mm bcd like Salsa, Engagement,
Willow, Vuelta when I can find them. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised
that most, if not all, of those rings are made by the same company!
Bottom line, they work for me, although some don't have the shift ramps
and pins found on Campy or TA....

TA work fine.
The 5th hidden bolt just screws the chainring directly into the
crankarm and wont cause any problems with the replacement chainring.

If you need to replace the hidden bolt, a chainring bolt for a tripple
does the job nicely.

thanks, my cranks are old C-Record and the 5th bolt actually screws
into a chainring nut that is serated on the outside and is positioned
on the outside of the big chainring instead ot the inside of the small
ring like all the others. I thought that it was pressed into the
C-Record chainring more tightly that it was. I ended up gently tapping
it out with a small hammer and then pressing it into a NOL chorus
chainring that I had. Seems to fit find, but I'll find out today when I
actually get it out on the road
