  1. Has this been definitively resolved

  2. There isn't just one type of margarine, there are many
types. Some have more trans fats than others. Imperial stick
margarine (the cheapest margarine found in grocery stores in
the USA) for example of attrociously bad for you. Many
margarines are use less. I guess there is no simple answer
to this question but since most margarines contain
significant amounts of trans fats, I personally use butter.
I won't eat trans fats in any amount, except the small
amount that occurs naturally in butter and oil and so on,
which are generally significantly less than that found in
    margarine.

Sorry for not having a definitive answer, but those are
    my thoughts.

    Eat neither.

  4. What if you want something like butter on your bread? What's the least
    evil thing assuming:

    1) You like bread
    2) with something like "butter" on it.

What would be best? I personally like olive oil
    actually . . .

I occasionally have a smear of light (low fat) cheese spread
on toast, but I haven't had any fatty spread on bread since
I discovered I couldn't tell the difference on a salad
sandwich when I ran out of marge about 30 years ago. YMMV
