We were visiting some family in Burlington VT over the last few days, and Friday was really
beautiful weatherwise so I decided to rent a bike at one of the shops on Main Street and check out
the Burlington Bikepath along the lakefront.
I had a very nice ride from the ferry dock up to the top end where it ends at the Winooski River
(BikeFerry was not running on a weekday). I tried to navigate my way up and around the river to
continue on northward but got a bit off the beaten path onto North Street at one point and then into
some residential neighborhoods (the only map I had was a general high-level tourist type of giveaway
map). So eventually I just got back onto the bikepath and headed south.
Continued south past the ferry dock, Vermont Railway yard, various parks, etc., etc. all the way
down to [IIRC] Austin Rd. where a small sign advised that "bikepath continues 0.5 miles, cross
tracks"....which I did, and indeed found a path which went on for maybe a half mile or so more and
then just seemed to stop abruptly on a suburban street. Was this little segment the South Burlington
bikepath ? Was there more to it than just that ?
Overall it was a very nice experience on a great day in the sunshine with some superb scenic lake
views (we always enjoy visiting Burlington) but am I the only one who thinks that this bike way
should be labeled better throughout its length ? Here and there, I did see a few signs but (as a
visitor from out-of-town) mostly it seemed like I either had to ask people or simply go on
intuition.
Also is there some sort of bicycling map which can be purchased or obtained which gives a little
more suitable level of detail ?
