Haven't cycled there, but everywhere I have cycled in France it's been
great. Friendly people, courteous drivers. If you speak even a little bit of
French - give it a go and you will be made very welcome I'm sure. Enjoy.

I spent parts of the summer of 2001 in and around Beaune and did some
cycling there.

Get the yellow Michelin map for the region (1:100 000, I think) if you
haven't already done so, and look for the narrowest "D" (Route
Departementale) and "C" (Route Communale) roads you can find. If you can't
find the map at home, they are available in supermarkets and lots of other
places in France.

The Cote d'Or region between Dijon and Puligny Montrachet is very pretty,
lots of farms and vineyards and lots of quiet, well maintained "D" roads.
Some of my best rides happened when I just followed signposts from one
village to the next, whether or not the road was on my map. Once you get out
of Beaune, the vineyards from there to Puligny Montrachet are laced with
narrow, quiet lanes that are excellent for cycling.

As Helen says, the drivers are quite courteous. My only scary moment came
when a Dutch tourist in a Volvo forgot that his caravan was wider than his
car, and almost sideswiped me.
