I am 60 years old and have been running about 25 miles per week for the last 15 years.
During this entire time I have had a moderate bunion on my left bigtoe joint. It has ached a little now and then but has never presented any real running problems. Also, I should add that it never grew any worse than when I first became aware of it.
Before I started running I went to a Podiatrist who immediately wanted to operate. A GP advised against it until it "becomes to painful to live with".
I decided against the operation, but I wonder if I would be better off having it removed before I get any older.
Would someone knowledgeable about the effects of a bunion removal operation upon a runner's continued ability to run, please speak to this topic.

I would tend to agree with your GP. In our shop I've seen many people who have had this operation and the success rate seems about 50/50. Like most surgeries involving the feet waiting until it's absolutely necessary would probably be the wise thing to do. If it's not bothering you I'd just let it be.
