Is it generally cheaper to build a bike than to buy one? I sas thinking something like Look 585 or a cerlevo R3 frame set and ultegra components and wheels of about that caliber. I don't know much about wheels except they get crazy expensive. I just think I would enjoy building a bike rather than just buying one and wondered if it's generally cheaper or if it comes out more expensive in the end.

It's generally more expensive to build a bike yourself especially on the higher end bikes that you mentioned.

Bike parts are a lot more expensive when bought piecemeal than when bought included in a complete bike.
So building is generally considerably more expensive than buying.
To have even a chance of breaking even (or maybe,maybe save a little) you need to be real skilled, and have the patience for bargain hunting.Last bike I bought, I payed abt 30-50% of the retail price for the components for everything but the spokes, and I probably just about broke even.
And, if it's your 1st build, you'll find yourself spending a bit on tools too.
But getting just what you want is kinda fun too.
