Hi, I'm hoping I can find some help from this forum. I'm not a super avid cyclist but had a Hamilton 29er single speed that I really liked until someone stole it, I hope he flew over the bars and scraped his face all over the pavement. Anyway, they don't make that model any more and instead of buying one I want to get a used frame for a 29er and build it myself. I'm looking for a frame, specifically one that will work with the wider tires that bike had so I can go street or light trail stuff. No shocks, want a hard tail, etc. Just the frame. Used is best, and I'm not looking to spend more than a couple hundred. Thanks for any advice and sorry for my lack of knowledge on the subject. My understanding is I need a 700c frame, horizontal dropouts for tightening the chain. I don't want gears of any kind, just a freewheel, the last one I could flip the tire around and make it fixed, or freewheel on the other side. Thanks again!

Sorry to hear about your bike beng stolen ...
If you can get by with 700x52 tires (at least, for the rear) AND you have the patience to look around OR do some DIY work then you can probably substitute a non-29er specific frame for some 29er riding situations ...
As happens to be the case, I sold my 29er SS frame a few years ago AFTER I figured out that the 700x52 tires would fit in my vintage GIANT Nutra (sports touring) framset ...
I also have a STEEL Hybrid frame whch will almost accommodate a 700x52 tire ... and, I'm pretty sure that with just a little bit of smithing that I will be able to make it viable for 700x52 tires, too.
- BOTH frames are designed to accommodate 700x42 tire PLUS fenders
Most unicrown forks can accommodate a 700x52 tire. The exception will be a CX fork.
- if the terrrain will demand it, you can get a suspension corrected rigid fork, of courrse ...
You do not need horizontal dropouts to set up a Single Speed ...
- probably, the most expensive option would be to use a WHITE INDUSTRIES ENO rear hub ...
- after that, you can opt for a chain tensioner which is typically (but, not always) attached to the frame's rear derailleur hanger ...
- or, you can use a HALF-LINK (this presumes a 1/8" chain)
- or, you can NOTCH the dropout (see Sheldon Brown's site regarding this).
So, try installing a 700x52 tire-and-tube on any 700c rear wheel which you have & take it around with you so you can test fit the wheel in whatever non-29er frame you may be considering.
Of course, eBay is a source for new-and-used frames -- including SS 29er frames.

alfeng > Thanks for the reply! The old bike had 700x40 tires so I hope that works with the frames you're recommending (?) I liked that width (or similar) for street and light trail stuff.
I really like the idea of using the WHITE INDUSTRIES ENO rear hub you recommended, it's pricy for sure but seems to open way more options for frame options. I checked out a couple of videos and their website and it seems like a good way to go.
