SJS Cycles have the new Brooks "classic" (made in China, synthetic inner coating) saddlebags for the
princely sum of 15 quid - even with transAtlantic P&P and the dollar, this may be a passable deal
for US residents...
Hence, having just got one of these, I thought I'd report on how it is. It _is_ small as transverse
saddlebags go, without either the colossal dimensions of Rivendell's offerings or a Carradice-style
longflap; conversely that means there's little risk of rear tyre rub on bikes without rear racks. It
lacks any kind of light mounting, so seatpost-mounted lights would be impossible. The straps look
adequate, but the leather is thin and I expect they will eventually require replacement.
The lid will have to be well strapped down; with the third strap (2/3 of the way down the back)
around the seatpost or seatstays (but you'd need a very short seatpost) the "top" opening is well
towards the rear. I believe the main pocket is pretty watertight, but the two side pockets (about
large enough to accomodate puncture kit, minitool, etc.) look like they'll let in the weather.
It does, however, appear to be pretty solidly put together, and has quite a respectable capacity;
but the main attraction remains the fact that it's dirt cheap...
