FYI for those who keep track of broken equipment. My Sunday ride was cut
short when I broke a left Look PP-296, a 2003 design that I bought on
close-out in late 2004 and have ridden probably 5-10K miles. I thought of
them as being pretty new because they live on my racing bike which gets
only weekend use as opposed to my cross and commuter bike which get much
more of a beating during the week.
I knew something was wrong -- if felt like I bent the spindle or my cleat
loosened. The spindle broke during seated climbing. Interestingly, the
spindle broke inside the pedal body, and I ended up with a little stub
sticking out of the crank arm, which gave me someting to push against (and
slip off) as I rode home one-legged. Luckily, I was only about 10 miles
from home, much of it down hill. I broke a Ti pedal spindle on an East
Rochester Tool and Die pedal in '76 and bent a spindle on a first
generation Shimano/Look, but this is the first CroMo spindle I have
