On Sunday, Bill, Patrick and I rode the Colorado mostly from town. We
started out climbing above the Animas Overlook, about 8 miles on dirt
until you reach the high connection to the Colorado Trail.
We had just started out down the single track, come to a slight uphill,
and Bill's freehub begins to slip. Without a close inspection, it is
evident that the freehup is gone, plenty of uphill left, Bill is out for
the count. On closer inspection, there is a crack across the hub, almost
2/3rds of the way from one end to the other. It is already split a 1/16
of an inch, he is not pedaling anywhere. Luckly, he is less than 1 mile
from the road, and a mostly downhill coast. He catches a ride to town
anyway (the hub looks dangerous), his bike shops says it is the 3rd Hugi
hub they have seen in this condition in a few weeks. Bill is not a big
guy (160 lbs) and rides very smoothly, this seems ridiculous to have
occured.
The rest of the 30 miles included an endo in a creek, a bad fall ending
in a bruised and cut up arm, bent deraillure, and a pinch flat. I was
beat, it was not my best ride, but a beautiful place not far from town.
