Its not that I am too lazy to Google for the info I want but local
knowledge is much better.
Thought I would go by train from Cardiff to Bristol for a days ride
starting from Bristol or thereabouts. Knocking on a bit now so 40-45
miles is about right. Ideally it would be all off road or at least
very quite lanes, also taking in Bath a city I love. Any info much
appreciated, oh and its a touring bike.

I'm not too familiar with the countryside to the East of Bristol, but I
do cycle beween Severn Tunnel Junction and central Bristol on occaision
- so you could pop your bike off there, cycle to Chepstow (~5 miles)
cross the bridge and that gets you on a sustrans route where you can go
North of Bristol (Olveston & Almondsbury) or South-West. Both ways hook
up with the Avon Valley Cycleway. Maybe catch the train back from
Bath...
