Bring on the ladybirds

I know the feeling. Riding through Epping Forest and I had to wear a
face mask to stop me swallowing a years supply of protiens.

At least you got aphids. At the Newcastleton control at 2am on Sunday
morning it was midges - the air was simply thick with them, and as I
got changed out of the shorts I'd been wearing for the day stages into
the tights I wore for the night stage[1] I don't believe there was a
square centimetre anywhere on my body that didn't get bitten. Then, of
course, on the descents later in the night I had the delightful choice
of charging down narrow twisty roads down steep hills either with my
glasses down on my nose so that I could see very little through the
sweat on them or up on my head so that the bloody midges could fly
straight into my eyes...

[1] This was a mistake - the night was too warm for tights.

Morning had broken, and there was nothing we could do but wait
patiently for the RAC to arrive.
