breathing in a bag

  1. i had this thought recently: if someone were to breath into a closed environment (like a plastic bag) for 60 sec followed by another 60 sec of regular air for an hour once a day for a couple of weeks, would their be any physiological adptation? my theory is that the bag will lose oxygen and slowly be replaced with CO2 (and heat and water vapor). the bloodstream is gradually exposed to more and more CO2. by alternating 60 seconds on and 60 seconds off prevents suffocation. so how does this sound to y'all? is it possible to train the body, at the cellular level, to tolerate more CO2 in the bloodstream and thus allowing more work to be done?

    Doesn't make any sense at all to me. The issue is not tolerating CO2, the issue is getting enough O2 (oxygen), and ultimately maximizing oxygen intake. You need oxygen to burn your food and ultimately turn its chemical energy into mechanical work. This is just the way the pertinent chemical reactions work, and it is not possible to make them work with anything but oxygen.

  4. You could get a hypoxic chamber. 🙂 Either that or get a can of nitrogen from Costco and mix it with oxygen. 😉

    What I learned (long time ago) was that for the physiological adaptation to take place, one has to spend 24/24 7/7 in a high altitude (or low O2) envirnoment. I have always thought that it makes sense, and that's why I personally don't believe in hypoxic tents.
