Breakin' the local Record

Hey guys... This year I figured I would celebrate being a Junior no more by breaking the record for fastest local 40 km. tt. I said in a previous thread that I was comparing weight lifting 40 km. times with non-lifting 40s. However, I have changed my mind... I want to break the record on the same course. So far, my fastest time was 57:21, but the record is 52:19, so I need to shave 5 minutes off my time, which is no simple task. Any ideas on how to do this?

dropping 5min in a 40k TT in one season can only be achieved with unethical practices. and even that is a long shot. dropping 5min within the next few seasons would be reasonable. but that isnt always the case. i was doing 72 min 40K TTs on a standard bike with no racing experience and limited training. one year later i did the same TT in 63min after a good season of training and upgrading to superior TT equipement. so it is certainly possible, but not at the level you are wanting.

A few questions:

How have you trained in the past?

Was the previous record set on the same course you did the 57:21 on?

What is the course like? Do you have a link to course profile?

I think it's possible to go that fast, but maybe not on that course since I think you said you're already at a pretty high level.

How can you make such a ridiculous comment?

Your statement isn't true. A few years back i coached a guy who when he started with me was doing 57 or 58's (for a 25mile TT). By the end of the season he was doing 50's or 51's.

Oh, and, i dropped 14-mins in my first season, in 6 months of completely unstructured 'training'.

my rationale is that if one's performance is already high, making significant gains (naturally) such as dropping 5min on an already impressive 40K TT in a short period of time is highly improbable.

the keyword is "improbable". not impossible. of course a few people out of many people will make impressive gains in a short period of time. there are exceptions to everything.

Improve your Watts/CdA ratio by 25-30% ...

I agree with Ric Stern-my first 40k was 1:03, then 1:00 then 58 and my last was faster still, but my memory fails me, but sub 55 I am pretty sure. That was in a two summer span (but 18+ years ago).

So you can most certainley improve by big jumps each time.

I am not really a very good time trialist. I am like Iban Mayo, more than anything, but I just wanted to try to celebrate my "first year as real cyclist by doing something special on a time trial. It is the same course, but they actually had a hill at the end last year as an experiment, but not the other years, so the times were significantly slower last year. I'm not sure if they are putting it back this year, though. The course is very tedious, and it is basically like a 30 km. straight, then it makes its way back to where it started, but doesn't come all the way. There are six through-out the year, and so if there is a headwind or rain one day, I will have plenty of other opportunities. I am going to try to post the topographical profile and how the course goes turn-wise on here today- new Garmin Computer!!!-, but I'm not sure how to get the info from cyclometer to computer, and I'm not sure I'm gonna have time to ride close to 80 km. today.

Also, I don't have an aero frame or bar end shifters, but I'm considering turining my current bike into a tt bike when, if ever, I get my new bike- a Cannondale Six13, or a Dario Pegoretti (or whatever his name is) Love # 3!!!

Listen, do us all a favour. Stop referring to drugs as the way to improve.

How about say, " work real hard, eat good and gets loads of rest". "Then work some more".

And although 58min for 40 k is good for the average cyclist, there are plenty that can do low 50's, and with natural resources.
