Kool Stop Salmon pads don't leave a residue. You can use some scotchbrite to clean the marks off of
your rims.

Some pads are more prone to this than others. If it bothers you a lot, ask the people at your local
bike shop for a recommendation for replacements, but otherwise I'd suggest ignoring it. My
experience has been that a lot of pads that start out marking will stop after a while as their
surfaces get worn in. There are many ways to get the marks off; my favorite way (borrowed from an
entirely different venue) is to rub them off using the rubber tread of a gym shoe with white soles.

Get Kool Stop "Salmon" colored pads and your rims will stay shiny. Your braking will also improve.
