  1. I was just looking at the pics from the Capital of Texas Triathlon from last year and it looks like
the swim groups were very tight. I'm hoping to enter my first Tri this year and was wondering how
ofter you look up to see where you're going? It also looks like a lot of people were either rolling
over on their backs or just making a big shoulder turn? Is that common? I'm a little worried about
swimming the 750m without stopping. I've been training with a clinic twice a week 1600-1800m per
    workout. Carlton.

  2. Carlton,

Actually, it's looking forward that matters -- popping up -- to verify the direction you're going
in, unless you trust the pack is always heading the right way. It's important to take control of
your own swim. Pop every 20 strokes or so (10 breaths, or 7 breaths if you breathe bilaterally). You
say, "I'm a little worried about swimming the 750m without stopping." That would only occur if
you're swimming too fast off your ideal pace. Again, reinforcing the idea of taking control.

Carlton.. last years CapTex was my first ever Tri and I had the same concern.. so much so that I
opted for the beginners distance 350m swim, just to see how I would react. It was crowded but if you
position yourself at the back of the pack and swim on the edges, you'll find its much easier to keep
your perspective. The good thing about Town Lake is the that its so narrow you can easily find
reference points along the banks and the bouys are HUGE.. the bad thing about Town Lake is that its
COLD... and the little thunderstorm we had right before the race washed a bunch of garbage into the
lake just as we were getting started. But I loved the CapTex.. I'm trying to postpone my fathers
70th birthday this year by a week so I can do it this year but he's not cooperating.

I know it helps me to actually swim the distance. If your swimming 1600-1800 in a workout
it probably wouldn't hurt to take a day and do an easy 750M+ swim without stopping. I do
that sometimes just to KNOW I can do the distance. Even over swimming the distance is a
    good idea IMO.

    Just a thought
