  1. Hey, how do i stop brakes from squeaking? i just bought a old bike for 50 dollars and want to fix this problem. Thanks

  2. Check to see if the pads are "toed," or at an angle to the rim.

Besides toe-in, clean the braking surface of the rims and pads + check/clean/lube/ddjust the pivots.

If they are catilever brakes, check the article from Sheldon Brown at URL:

Also, some old pads weren't very good to start with and aging + contamination don't help. If you are going to replace the pads, seriously consider KoolStop Salmon color pads. They will add substantially to you $ investment, but they will stop better and last longer than most other pads out there. And no, I don't work for KoolStop or have other financial interest in them, but I have used their product with great satisfaction.
