Rob,
Re your request for opinions on this hill on uk.rec.walking
When I did it, I combined it with Streap. Total time 8 hours 30 mins of which descent from Uamhachan
summit was 3 hours 5 mins. However, these times were rather slower than normal as I was severely
dehydrated (roasting hot day - didn't replenish water stocks when I had the chance in the valley
between the Corbetts - absolutely no watercourses on Uamhachan itself). In comparison, time to climb
Gulvain up Gleann Fionnlighe (on another baking hot day) was just under 6 hours. So there is
probably not much in it time-wise between the two approaches (assuming only Uamhachan is the
objective). I think that the Gleann Dubh Lighe way would be my preference as it seemed to be
scenically more interesting. Also there's a useful car park at the start of this way.
My notes don't indicate anything about any doubt as to the location of Uamhachan's summit, although
I must have passed over the alternative point you mention as I reached the top from the north.
Re. Mark Bull's comments about Streap. My notes indicate that I climbed straight up Meall an Uillt
Chaoil (presimably from where the path ends on the OS map) and didn't mention any particularly bad
ground. It was a steep slog up a quite bouldery slope with some streams in deep rocky channels that
required a southerly diversion to circumvent.
Best wishes
Martin Likeman
