I want to rebuild the bottom bracket on my Bridgestone mountain bike. Can
someone point me to a resource that will provide some guidance? In
particular, I'm looking for information regarding unique-not in the usual
mechanics toolbox-tools that I'll need.

No "unique" tools are needed, but some specialized ones are.
