Just spent a couple of hours sticking new brake pads on my bike and fixing the gears so I can use the full range now.
After everything was done and I'd oiled the chain I noticed that the bottom bracket seems to be a bit loose. On inspection, there seems to be lots of black grease exposed on the drive side which I've never noticed before. Has my bottom bracket died an untimely death?
I'm pretty sure it's not something simple like a loose crank arm or pedal because wobbling one of them wobbled the other (if the crank/ pedal was loose it shouldn't transmit through to the other side). This may be the root of my gear problems as the front derailleur only just goes far enough across to shift onto the biggest chainring.
I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a sealed one which should last for more than 18 months/4000 miles!

Sounds like it. Better take it off and have a look, it might just be loose but I suspect the worst.

I doubt it's anything that fancy! It's only a GT Aggressor (2006 model).
I've got the non drive side cup out, have just had to come in and make a retaining tool for the drive side as it's well stuck in and there's not much spline to get the tool into.
Might manage to get out for a ride eventually this weekend...
