    The Boston Phoenix recently had a cycling supplement, and they put it on line:

    Joe Breeze is quoted as saying, "it’s very expensive to
    drive a car; I mean, just on a personal level, it’s 35
    cents a mile, conservatively. A bicycle is probably less
    than a nickel."

    That sounds about right; so I save about 30 cents per mile
    commuting to work, which amounts to about $750 per year. The
    real savings, though, is in capital outlay: my commuter bike
    was about $500, and a comparable commuter car (like my
    wife's car) would have been twenty times as much. Assuming a
    ten-year lifespan for each, I am saving $950 per year in
    capital cost.
