If a full sized SUV or Pickup Truck hit the Bollards like those little toy
cars did, they would be bent so bad they would not rise or lower, of course
the SUV would also be bent s some.

Delivery vans are about the same size and tonnage as your Suburban, and I
have seen them lifted. The bollards are plenty tough. To bend them as
you think they should be bent would require that the van/SUV/truck move
much faster than any of the vehicles in this film could move--something
that is either impossible (bollard is a few hundred feet after a corner)
or impracticable (bollards located in very dense pedestrian environments).

Facts are unlikely to convince him. The next thing you know, he'll insist

Because, y'know, Amurrkun SUVs are unstoppable.

But whatever are those "bollards" about? What's the context,
traffic control? Secure locations? "Traffic calming" civil
engineering that just pisses everyone off? One of those incidents
looked as if the vehicle driver didn't know something was up. Do
these things just pop up around town like some subterranean
    predator?

They are used to separate pedestrian malls from auto traffic, allowing
public transit to serves the mall. We have those right here where I
live, except that they are 10" in diameter (for monster SUV's) and are
used to keep cars out of pedestrian/bicycle areas.

The city center of Brig Switzerland is bollard off, for instance an I
like it. I'm sure they are common in many advanced city centers. It
beats getting out and unlocking a steel post to be manually moved and
    replaced after passage.

Is there a black market for bollard transponders?

Here's a few more test, first is an Automatic Bollard, notice it appears to
be much larger than the ones in the Manchester video.

The second appears to be fixed, although it stopped the truck, it didn't
    fair so well.

Gee, I thought that dangerous features implemented in ways to
endanger unsuspecting drivers and damage their vehicles were a
uniquely US feature. It's good to know stupidity is worldwide.

Where these bollards are in use, there are usually BIG signs indicating
"NO ENTRY" or "BUSES ONLY". In many cases, a mini-roundabout gives
non-bus traffic a chance to turn around before running headlong into the
    bollards.

It's not as if the bollards are being deployed randomly, although that
    would be fun.

Also, to those people who think a badass SUV would conquer these--keep
dreaming. The hydraulics that run these bollards easily lift SUVs off the
    ground.

    -Luigi

As much as I like the schadenfreude of these bollards deploying on cars,
This could be prevented with a relatively inexpensive change that would
greatly increase the psychological inhibition of trying to cheat the
    bollards.

Make it into an "airlock" arrangement, with a train-crossing type gate
descending behind the bus before the bollards drop:

    : BUS | car

As you can see from my diagram, the gate (|) would normally be open when
the bollards were up. When the bus takes up its position in front of the
bollards, the gate would close as the bollards descended.

The cheating car shown in my diagram could then try to drive through the
(mostly harmless) gate, but most people won't do this: it's obvious that
driving through a closed gate will slightly damage your car and
definitely wreck the gate. We're inhibited against doing so.

If people did start driving through gate, I'd be shocked, but in that
case, you just convert the gate to bollards. If a clever sort tries to
stop over the bollards as they're going to go up, just have 'em sound a
big klaxon and a few flashing lights. All but the most ASBO-seeking
    driver would back up.

Apart from the obvious warnings the drivers ignored, I don't
actually have a problem with the idea of occasional road
dangers for motorists. It might keep them paying attention.
Think of it as the cager equivalent of being doored for a
bicyclist , or getting hooked by a turning car. As a bicyclist,
because you always have to be alert for the possibilities, you
develop a certain hyper-alertness to the road. Too many
motorists are insensate or not paying enough attention -
of course these are the same ones that tell you bicycling is
dangerous, as if driving wasn't. It wouldn't be such a bad thing
    if driving _required_ more attention.

    BTW, this isn't cager-hate - I drive a car too. I learned to
ride a bike in traffic before learning to drive and I think it
helped learning to drive (though of course my driving the
first year was still awful, as everyone's is).

We could start by outlawing air bags, and requiring

    every car.

    Great choice of music!

I don't get the last one - with the two vans.

Seems like maybe tradesmen or delivery people or some such are
authorized to enter the area and the second guy might have just
been following the first one in to some job site or delivery
location and maybe didn't even see the things.

OTOH, you'd think that bollard lore would be pretty firmly

    Dear Pete,

In that final brief episode, the van with legitimate business and a
radio control is pulling through the bollards, while the jackass
behind him with no radio to control the bollards is obviously trying
to blast through the pedestrian crossing from another angle--the
bollards may have stopped him from hitting the van ahead of him.

As for "not seeing the things," play the opening scene again--no
reasonable person is going believe anyone who claims that he failed to
see those two huge signs on either side of the barriers.

    http://tinyurl.com/ybfsmj

Every summer, [censored] just like the ones in the video drive half a
mile the wrong way through the City Park in Pueblo, head-on into
one-way traffic around blind corners, because the east entrance to the
park is closed with a metal gate on Sundays.

These jerks invariably claim that they didn't see the signs saying
"no-entrance" and "wrong-way" when they came to the 20-foot wide gate
closing their half of the street, stopped, and then swerved three
    lanes over.

For some odd reason, the morons lose their ability to read glaringly
obvious signs only early in the morning, when they think that there
won't be any traffic coming through the one-way street--just as the
idiots in the videos are blind to the signs only when they think they
can blast past through behind a legitimate car and go fast enough to
escape the rising bollards--which they have sat and watched, rising
and falling, as they planned their attack.

    Cheers,

    Carl Fogel

It's a little hard to tell, but I don't think those signs say anything
like "severe vehicle damage and personal injury will occur". I think
you need more warning than "authorized vehicles only" when the result
may be serious personal injury for an infraction.

People can be absent minded, or just plain ignorant, or just plain
violating the law for personal benefit; I think the penalty here
    exceeds the infraction.

Where I have seen this type of access control in use in England, the signs
    also say DANGER: RISING BOLLARDS.

If you think that driving our car over or through large, rising metal
barriers will NOT result in any danger to yourself, I submit that perhaps
you are not qualified to operate a motor vehicle on public rights of way.
