  1. Is it possible, or likely to gain up to 2 pounds of lean body mass in just
    one week's time?

I'm having a hard time keeping track of fat loss and new muscle mass at the
same time. I'm trying to loose 10lb of fat and gain lean body mass at the
    same time.

When I am dieting and NOT working out, I can see the scale go down a pound
each week... its only when I starting working out that the damn scale goes
UP *two pounds* a week even though my diet hasn't changed!! If anything, I
would expect the scale to not go ANYWHERE.... I want to loose as much fat as
the muscle that I am putting on.

So in addition to the question above, my second question is: can working out
heavily cause your body to start storing more fat than usual, or at least
    prevent you from loosing fat?

I'm wondering if I should not try to do both at the same time. Maybe I
should diet every other week??? I don't trust those body fat scales.

Also, is it true that muscle weighs more than fat?

    Thanks.

    Richard

Ditch the scale, and go by what you see in the mirror.

If your caloric intake remains the same, no.

    Yes.

'Lean body mass' is not just muscle, it includes everything that is
not bodyfat including that pizza you ate for lunch.

If you are just using a scale that is a poor measurement. To gain
muscle and lose fat at the same time is opposite goals really - usually
only beginners get a short window of opportunity to do this and then
its one or the other as a goal.

Give your program a chance to even itself out. Anytime you start
something new it takes your body awhile to adjust to the changes. You
didnt get out of shape in a week. Use a tape measure, get your bodyfat
tested. Compare in three months from now.

Duh. A pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle, or a pound of
feathers or a pound of anything. Its still a pound of weight
measurement. But a pound of muscle takes up less room (condensed more)
than a pound of fat - here is a picture comparison of 5lbs fat vs 5lbs
    muscle (bottom of page): http://www.geocities.com/jgrrl2/math.html
