  3. Omega 3 PUFAs tend to disintegrate tissues, apparently due to free
    radical damage. If you read "Dieat and Health," by the National
    Research Council, you can read about their misgivings about taking such
    supplements. The talk of the Greenland Eskimoes, who did not live very
    long on such diets. Then there is:

    You had better hope there isn't much, if you are eating them.

    For example:

    And that was on top of the 10-fold increase over rats on the fat free
    diet (when corn oil was added.

    The ways in which dietary polyunsaturated fats and antioxidants affect
    the balance between activation and detoxification of environmental
    precarcinogens is discussed, with particular reference to the
    polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon benzo(a)pyrene. The structure and
    composition of membranes and their susceptibility to peroxidation is
    dependent on the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of the cell
    and its antioxidant status, both of which are determined to a large
    degree by dietary intake of these compounds. An increase in the PUFA
    content of membranes stimulates the oxidation of precarcinogens to
    reactive intermediates by affecting the configuration and induction of
    membrane-bound enzymes (e.g., the mixed-function oxidase system and
    epoxide hydratase); providing increased availability of substrates
    (hydroperoxides) for peroxidases that cooxidise carcinogens (e.g.,
    prostaglandin synthetase and P-450 peroxidase); and increasing the
    likelihood of direct activation reactions between peroxyl radicals and
    precarcinogens. Antioxidants, on the other hand, protect against lipid
    peroxidation, scavenge oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive
    carcinogenic species. In addition some synthetic antioxidants exert
    specific effects on enzymes, which results in increased detoxification
    and reduced rates of activation. The balance between dietary
    polyunsaturated fats, antioxidants and the initiation of carcinogenesis
    is discussed in relation to animal models of chemical carcinogenesis
    and the epidemiology of human cancer.

    Moreover, Biochemist Ray Peat has cited much older studies, such as how
    dogs fed
    fish oil all died of cancer:

    "Fifty years ago, it was found that a large amount of cod liver oil in
    dogs' diet increased their death rate from cancer by 20 times, from the
    usual 5% to 100%. A diet rich in fish oil causes intense production of
    toxic lipid peroxides, and has been observed to reduce a man's sperm
    count to zero. [H. Sinclair, Prog. Lipid Res. 25, 667, 1989.]"

    Peat notes of the Sinclair experiment:

    "An oil researcher spent 100 days eating what he considered to be the
    Eskimo diet, seal blubber and mackerel paste. He observed that his
    blood lipid peroxides (measured as malondialdehyde, MDA)
    reached a level 50 times higher than normal, and although MDA
    is teratogenic, he said he wasn't worried about fathering
    deformed children, because his sperm count had gone to zero."

    Stop listening to the hype (mostly from people who want to sell you
    supplements) and start doing your own thinking and research! You can
    search this group for montygram and read through some of my posts, then
    if you have questions, feel free to ask. You can start a post with
    montygram, such as "Montygram: what did they really find in this
    study?" In many studies, the researchers' interpretations are clearly
    inconsistent with the evidence that they themselves generated. Here's
    a good example, cited by those who claim that omega 3 and PUFAs in the
    diet are "essential:" Pregnant cats were fed highly artificial diets,
    and they only got hydrogenated coconut oil as a source of fat. Some
    kittens were born healthy, but most had problems or died. Basic logic
    tells us that if something is essential, then none of the kittens would
    be healthy. I propsed an experiment that would be on point and
    "natural:" feed the pregnant cats all the mice they want, but the mice
    would be raised on fresh coconut oil. I have had problems with mice
    eating my shredded coconut, so there's no doubt that mice will eat it
    naturally. The mice will be "esssential fatty acid deficient," so the
    cats can't get the "essential fatty acids" from the mice, and the only
    thing else we would give them is basic vitamin/mineral supplements to
    elminate that as a factor (which was not done in the first "essential
    fatty acid" experiment, because not all the vitamins were even known at
    that time (1930). Nobody has expressed any interest in taking me up on
    this offer, mainly because the terms are that if it is demonstrated
    that "essential fatty acids" are not, they must pay for the expenses
    incurred in the experiment, whereas I will pay if all the kittens die
    under these conditions.

    The fact that they don't understand basic logic should, by itself, make
    you very concerned about such claims.

  4. Walnuts contain high amounts of polyunsaturated fats (~10g per 1oz
    serving). Included in this 10g are Omega-3 Fatty acids, slow blood
    clotting (this is why they're good in protecting against heart disease
    - fewer clots = fewer blocked arteries). You're probably getting
    nosebleeds because your blood isnt' clotting as quickly as before
    eating the walnuts (how many are you eating a day, anyway?), which
    would have prevented or decreased the number off bleeds.

    What is the benefit you hope to gain from taking Black Walnut
    supplements? How many grams/oz do you eat per day (or is it in some
    other form?)
