It is *neutral* variability on the DNA level that is
similar. Of course even a single mutation can have drastic

averaged across many polymorphisms (or as measured by a
bunch of randomly picked ones) is not changed by that.

Not so. This variation is very useful for studying
population characteristics and history. You seem to have the
impression that all of the geneticists are those cute people
