I plan to do a bike and hike next year. Start in N Carolina and go to Oregon, then down the Cali coast to San Diego and home via Southern rt and up through Georgia.
I ride about 100 to 125 miles a week right now regularly and I'm adding steeper and steeper grades.
I ride a piece of [censored] 200.00 bike from [censored]... a Hybrid. Because I don't want to race, I'm interested in the cardio/stamina/enduance benefits... and I just like to put on the headphones, crank the metal and enjoy the ride... this bike has been fine. However, I realize it's no good for a trip cross country. Unless I get some sponsorship I don't have the budget for a 1000.00 bike or anything so what would you recommend? I'm 5'7" 140 lbs so I'm a little guy. I'm also 60.
Also, can anyone recommend good networking sources for route planning. advice on what to take etc.? The plan is for my wife to follow ahead in a vehicle daily so I won't have to travel too heavy, but I know there are some things I'll need to have on me at all times.
I'm attempting to hook up and make this a fund raiser as well for Special Olympics and the National Epilepsy Foundation because of my handicapped son, but it's also something I have always wanted to do.
Any advice and/or helpful source info is appreciated.
