I'm planning on taking my bike over to Europe next year - I think I've got an Alp in me (perhaps I'd better rephrase that...) - but I'd really like my pride and joy intact when I get there. Any tips on its safe travel? Are padded bike bags good for air travel - big bucks for a rigid plastic box aren't really justifiable.

A friend of mine flew from Canada to Scotland last year and just sent his bike as it is, not even boxed, no problems either way. But I think most people use the cardboard boxes from bike shops, the ones that they pack bikes in at from factory.
