Hi I just got an used Minoura Team Mag Turbo III Trainer... How much noise should it make...it sounds like there is something rubbing on something inside where the black cover is..it only does this at higher speeds and goes on for a few seconds then off then back on ( The noise ) does any part need oil or grease ?

I have a Blackburn mag trainer. Mine was also making noise. I had read some on-line complaints about people's mag units self-destructing. I opened mine up and found this: the unit is very simple, the resistance part was an aluminum disc that spun between 2 stationary plates that had ceramic magnets glued on. The gap between the plates was adjustable to set the resistance level. The aluminum disc was attached to a spindle with a set screw, and the set screw had loosened, causing the disc to rub, making the noise. I tightened the screw, and no more noise (4 years later). The only other moving parts in mine were the 2 spindle bearings, which looked to be fairly beefy, standard cartridge bearings with dust seals. I wouldn't imagine these would need re-greasing for a very long time since it's such a clean environment, but it might not be too hard to open the seals to look.

Inside the resistance unit are a series of magnets on flat steel or plastic plates. (Each magnet looks like two quarters ) Between the magnets is an aluminum disc which spins quite rapidly. If a magnet is loose in its mount ( some models are glued in place, some are held by a stamping in the steel plate) or if the aluminum disc is bent they will touch .
Either secure a loose magnet or straighten a bent aluminum disc. Neither is difficult.
The bearing is pretty durable but if it has been stored in a damp place and rust is noticeable you might grease it . To do that you'll have to pry up the seal. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971
