I also suggest putting your bikes in your truck without a rack. Why
do you have a truck if not to carry loads without special equipment?

There's a million quick and easy ways to strap bikes standing up, if
you must stand them up.

Mountain bikes are fine laying on the bare bed; they take a beating
from off-road riding anyway. Two mountain bikes fit perfectly with
seatpost and stem laying on the rail, and the saddle and handlebar
hanging over the side. Position the bikes to avoid the handlebar
scratching the truck's paint.

If you want to protect road bikes, put a blanket down, and fold it
over each bike before piling the next one on.

I stand my bike up and run a strap to my ladder rack, but if I
didn't have a rack, I'd just strap it to the stake pockets and/or
hooks in the bed. You could strap it down by it's top tube,
motorcycle-style if you want.

On my truck i have 2 of those fork mount quick release things bolted
to the front truck bed wall. I had to drill holes to mount them but i
never have to remove them to carry other stuff. The bed liner has
ribbs in the floor that hold the rear wheels in place. Cheep & simple!
