Bike Rack problem

Hi Caher,
I'm from the UK but live in California now and have the same "problem", however, it hasn't really been one because I've had two bikes on the back of my Car often over the last 18 months, they completely obscure my number plate and the lights are partialy obscured and I've never been pulled over....I've even had Cops stop behind me at the lights...

They're pretty strict over here, probably as strict as the UK....

I look at it this way, if Boot/hatch/trunk mounted bike carriers were illegal then manufacturers would have to cease making them....stores would have to stop selling them...or at least stick a big warning on the Rack saying something like "Do NOT mount this Rack on your Car"

Have you tried fitting the bike inside the Car? My wife's 2000 VW Beetle will swallow my 56 Cannondale with the rear seats down...problem is, it will only accomodate one bike, so if we go riding together she has to sit in the Car and wait for me to come back....;-)

However I have noticed a big problem – it covers my number plate and partially the lights of my hatchback. That must be illegal here in the UK.

No I think your idea is good. Even with the Saris Bones on my number plate and lights can still be seen although it would require the police to squint a bit harder! My problem really is that I still have the old high mounted carrier and want to get rid of it because it’s a real pain to re-erect every time. The new one is quick and easy.
Yes my bike would fit in the back but this requires me to remove the wheels and if its also muddy a bit of a nuisance.
