Given the day and a request from my mother, I am in search of a bike for her. She is in her late 60's and in pretty good shape for her age - she can hike 6 miles without complaint.
She has asked for a bike for her birthday to ride to and from her job on a basically flat course. This bike must be utilitarian, easy for an older person to mount, durable and, I am hopeful, will cost in the realm of $300.
Any suggestions? She has an old Schwinn Traveler III but I really don't think she could get on it anymore. She needs a step-through frame. Also, I am thinking internally geared three speed hub or some such and a single chainring on the front.

I know this isn't in your price range, but thought I'd share my mother's experience. She's of similar age and fitness. She bought a Cannondale "comfort bike" a couple of years ago for about $600. Not sure the model but it's got the step- through frame, plus seatpost suspension, suspension stem, 700c x 35 hybrid tires, grip shifters with triple front and 6 or 7 speed in the rear. She hadn't ridden in 20 years before that, but the position is VERY upright and she's very comfortable. She rides several time a week now.
