Bike Carrier problem

A mate reckons that I should fashion up some sort of bracket for each bike
that attaches to the headstem, with a bit of flexibility and hook it up to
the seat pole at the other. This'd give the bikes back the 'expected'
thin horizontal bar.

Is this the way to go? Is there an off the shelf item that I should be
hunting for that already fixes this problem?

PS. Roof racks aren't a viable option as they're already being used for
something else.
PPS. Any solution needs to be pretty solid and withstand a bit of abuse.
The rack is mounted to a fourby and camper and will thus get shaken around
a fair bit getting into/out of campsites.

Check your local bike shop for that bar you require, my father had to
purchase some for his dual suspension bikes.

Yep ... eggzacketerly what I need. Perhaps with bigger brackets on the end,
but I'm sure thay make em.

$40 at the local shop seems a bit steep, but they're well made and will do
the job. Shoulda just wandered down there in the 1st place .... Doh!
