A few days ago, CNN had a shot of a family evacuating some Cuban fishing
village before Wilma was to hit. Daddy, mommy, what looked like two kids,
some possessions, and possibly a cluch of fowl or some type, were all
moving out of harm's way. On one Raleigh 3-speed. Very similar to my own
commuter bike. Of course, living in a _fishing_ village, and in a
communist country, none of them had a spare ounce on them. The shot wasn't
long enough to be editorial, it was just interesting.
My wife spent last Winter in South America, and apparently one bicycle
can hold 2 adults and 4 children.... Of course, only one person is on
an actual bicycle seat. Think about when you were a kid, and your
sister sat behind you on the banana seat, one friend on the handlebars,
and another standing on the rear axle, and you are starting to get the
idea.. Add front and rear racks, and you could have a rider (standing
on the pedals), one on the seat, one on the handlebars, another on the
front rack, another one on the rear rack, and everyone but the rider
holding onto stuff with one hand each..... Oops one short, the baby who
is in one of those baby bags on moms back, and you have six people on
one bicycle. Wonder what you need for tire pressure?
