the question that you are asking is a very broad question.

so here are some questions that you need to answer for yourself first.

1. What kind of bike are you interested in. Mountain or Road

2. How much are you willing to spend.

3. How long of a distance are you talking about here.

4. What kind of biking will you be doing.

I would recommend going with a namebrand company, trek, specialized, gary fischer, cannondale, etc.

The best thing you can do is just go to a bike shop and talk to the people there. Try all the different bikes, and go with what works best for you.

If you are just using this bike to commute a couple of miles to work then there is no need to spend a large amount of money.

If you are using it to get into exercising, then I suggest going with something like a trek 4300 or lower. There is no point in spending large amounts on money on a bike until you experience riding for a while. After you realize you enjoy it then the sky is the limit.

I do not recommend a full suspension bike to anyone who is NOT doing downhill mountain biking (i.e. jumps, drops, etc) its a waste of money.

Pretty much any bike will take you long distances. It is all in how you take care of your bike. If you are willing to take the time to learn how to tune up your bike, clean it properly, and just flat out mantain*sp* it then go spend some money on a bike from a local bike shop. If you are just looking for something to ride that you don't care about taking care of. Then go to walmart. There is nothing worse than seeing a good bicycle go to waste.

As a personal preference I recommend trek cause it is what I ride. Your tastes could be different though.
