  1. I have what appears to be an abnormally huge amount of hair growing
out of my belly button. Seriously, I could make a wig for an adult
racoon with the amount of hair that is growing from it.

I also have to admit something very embarrassing. The clumps of hair
that I pull out are sometimes wet with blood, and they smell
approximately equivelant to a wedge of stinky Limburger that has been
has been ripening inside a dead, human body that was pulled from a
    cesspool behind a Taco Bell.

I suspect that part of the problem is what you already suspect:
hygiene. You see, about three years ago I moved in with my elderly
parents to help care for them. My mother is a bit of a looney tune.
She believes that the house is going to fall down due to the steam
generated by the hot water used during a typical shower.

Her fear is so great that neither she nor my father shower at their
house. They signed up at a local gym so that they could shower there
instead, and therefore the gym will fall down instead of their house.
I understand you are now thinking about the many ways I can allay my
mother's fear regarding steam. Please don't bother wasting the mental
    energy.

Back to what's important: me. My theory is this: because I am
showering less my belly button buildup is growing. Where I would
typically shower twice a day, I now may shower every other day. We
have a shower at work, but it is jam-packed with people who have just
    finished exercising.

These people do not take kindly to someone who has not exercised
enjoying a hot, lingering shower. The typical reaction to my
showering without exercising first is about the same as if I was not
showering at all, but simply turning the shower on, and then wearing
everyone's dirty underpants on my head for twenty minutes.

    My questions to you are:

Is this hair actually growing from my belly button, or is it simply
collecting there from other places? If is actually growing from my
belly button can I extract the gene that is prodigiously producing
this hair, and market it on late night television? Are any belly
buttons open to the abdomen, or should they be entirely closed? Is
the source of blood from such an opening? Is this belly button
problem something to be concerned about in general, or may I continue
to gross out my cat with these clumps of stinky hair without concern?

Thanks very much for you help.

    Regards,
    Hana

    Is looneytunity perhaps hereditary?

There's no excuse. All you need is a pan of warm water and some mild soap.

    Well you're not alone (bleeding)
    http://www.diagnosishealth.com/discussion2/disc77_tocf.htm

I would think that you can pretend to exercise, then shower and try to let
some of the water spray the belly button area (to try and soften it up).
Of course a bath might be better for that. Or laying on a bed on a towel
and dripping warm water into the belly button. This would be just before
going to a doctor. They have or should have an instrument to look in
there. You may have a yeast or other infection, infected hair follicle(s)
or other. If the hair is attached, perhaps (s)he would be able to snip
some in order to see better and treat whatever's going on. (Do clean
yourself all over first including fresh change of clothes). Later, maybe
you can consult a hair removal place if the doctor agrees hair is growing
out of your belly button (and it's not just lint, fur, and other foreign
    objects).
