  1. Hi All

I have recently come back to cycling to try to get a bit fitter and lose some weight. Last year I
bought a Dawes Discovery 201 (hybrid bike) and after a lapse for the winter am back into cycling 4
    or 5 times a week.

After reading advice here I have purchased some Shimano SPD M037 shoes which make a fantastic
difference. I would next like to get some clipless pedals and was looking for a bit of help.

All my journeys are on road, quite hilly, and I am starting to manage 20
    - 25 mile trips without feeling like death (although looking at the average speed debates on this
group I have a long way to go !).

The recommended pedals on the Shimano web site are PD-M424 (£23), PD-M515 (£20) or PD-M324 (£28).

The 424s have a pop-up binding - I have no clue what this means ! The 324s are SPD one side and flat
the other (useful I imagine) The 515s are cheapest but have no "cage".

Also which cleats ? Do they come with the pedals ? Which are best the single or multi directional
    release ones.

Finally (whew !) should I be looking at other makes instead of Shimano and would they be OK with
    my shoes ?

    Any info would be great.

  2. I've tried most of 'em, clips and clipless, and I like the 324s (or 323s) (SPD one side and cage on
the other) for touring and hacking - racing's another matter. They are versatile and if your feet
start to hurt (at around 60 miles or so), you can unclip, flip them over and vary the position of
your foot. There are other brands of all types which are "SPD" compatible, notably VP, and Edinburgh
Co-op I see have some other brand 324-ish pedals under £20. Most pedals come with cleats. I prefer
    the Shimano multi-direction ones.
