So, I'm 18, I'm graduating from high school with my associates degree this year (thank the lord for running start ), I'm attending a local massage school next year to get my message certification, and then....I want to become a bicycle mechanic. I've been into bikes for the past 4 years and have been repairing them for a solid 3. I still have a reasonable amount to learn though.
I live in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. We have three bicycle shops. Two are bad (in my opinion), and one is good. The good shop is a one-man show that just recently came to town. The shop seems really good so far. The guy is nice and has a good attitude. After getting a bunch of in-store credit from him for a bunch of parts I had lying around, I asked him if he would consider an apprenticeship for me. This was my chance at getting my hand in early in the bike repair biz. I knew it would be a smart move that I would both enjoy and be able to use as a stepping stone to becoming a mechanic. Unfortunately, HE ALREADY GOT AN APPRECTICE!! I couldn't believe it. I should have moved in earlier! I figured it would have been better to visit his shop a few times before popping the question, considering he had only just arrived to town. BUt No, I should have asked him right off. Never again will I hesitate to take the initiative on a good opportunity. And damn that other kid who stole my chance .
With no other local opportunities in sight, I have begun considering bike repair school as an option. It could be good. Pick a nice school where I could work as a masseur close by. What do you think? Are there any other wise choices? How did you become a bike mechanic? Do you recommend any particular schools? Will you give me a job? I'm excited to see what some of you have to say.
