Are we all just winging it when it comes to battery installation in our bike computers and accessories? I mean, seriously, how many of us have actually read the manual or followed proper precautions when slapping in a new battery? Ive seen people just yank out the old one and jam in the new one without even checking the polarity, let alone worrying about static electricity or other environmental factors that could fry the whole system.
And dont even get me started on the whole just use a battery with the same voltage and amp rating approach. Is that really good enough? Are we just lucky that our devices havent spontaneously combusted yet? Ive heard tales of people using batteries from completely different manufacturers and wondering why their Garmin is on the fritz.
So, whats the deal? Are there any real-world consequences to sloppy battery installation, or are we just paranoid for worrying about it? Should we be using specialized tools and equipment to handle batteries, or is that just overkill? And what about the environmental impact of all these batteries were carelessly tossing around?
Can someone please enlighten me on the dos and donts of battery installation, and maybe, just maybe, we can avoid a collective face-palm when our devices start malfunctioning due to our own negligence?
