Bat Bite Part 2

    Sorry about the 2 previous inept attempts to post this story. Technology has some people bewildered.

    Original post: Thursday 2 Dec
    To add to the bird stories have just been given First Aid for a bat strike.
    Roaring along McIllwraith St South Townsville at about 35kmh and everything suddenly went black, see a fruit bat flap away from my face and realise that I am bleeding from a small deep cut on forehead.
    Nearest "civilisation" is the Metropole Hotel 100m away around in Palmer St so off I wobble. Rock up there, blood everywhere and lots of advice. Its 9.30 and some of the advisors are a little worse for wear but their concern was genuine enough. Washed the wounds copiously and recovered from the wack. Assembled multitude decide that I need an Ambo just as I am recovering and contemplating the 14 km ride back to Pallarenda. Managed to cancell the blood box and clear out before someone decides that 12 beers is the best treatment.

    Because Townsville is so close to New Guinea, for bats that is, they can bring back the deadly lissa virus from PNG. So, its off to the doc tomorrow to start a course of Rabies shots....ouch.

    Part 2 Monday 6 Dec .....................

    Went to Dr. on Friday and reception tries to fob me off to Emergency at Hospital 25km away. I know that will be a day wasted so eventually they contacted Qld Tropical Health. Phone Interview and told they will send Rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin (IG) to surgery. Vaccines free, costs for administration.
    IG injection into/around wound sites not pleasant. Four more rounds of this to go.
    This is the disease that the Brisbane horse trainer Vic Rail died from in 1998.

    Apparently all bats in Australia have the potential to carry lyssavirus.
    As if dodging idiot car drivers isnt enough now have to learn to dodge bats.

    Glad to hear you are getting the vaccine Hugh. That is like a horror story
    lol...
    I knew someone up here who was bitten by a flying fox and he too had the
    shots. Can never be too careful.

    12 beers sounds about right doesn't it? Maybe round it up to 15 to make
    sure the treatment's effective...:-)

    How many points do you get for a bat I wonder. I've hit dogs, a cat, a
    bloody fox along St. Kilda Rd., a rabbit on the EJ Whitten bridge bike
    path, a sheep just on the East Keilor side of said bridge and had a near
    miss with a goat on Pascoe Vale rd. in Strathmore but I've NEVER even
    come close to getting a bat. Only the fox caused skin / blood loss though.

    I hope the injected unpleasantness wears off quickly.

    Oh and get a BATMAN t-shirt...:-)

    Crikey you have run over half of Noahs Ark. Bloody critter magnet!
    Dont know how many points but not falling off the bike has to be a miracle -
    total blackness!
    Thankfully the mangoes are nearly finished so it will be safe soon. The
    bats get stuck into the fruit and everywhere a mango tree overhangs the road
    it is covered in partly chewed fruit.
    Now that its started to rain here the next night time hazard is going to be
    Cane Toads.

    On numerous occasions saw foxes raiding the bins at night in Vic Barracks on
    St K Rd.
    Injections - 2 down 3 to go.
    Yes will have to get a Batman T and wear it to the Metropole.
