Wherever the source of the taint, the stink comes from the players' union and their arrogant
disregard for the sport. Baseball is behind every other major sport in the U.S. and not in the same
ballpark as any Olympic sport when it comes to drug testing and holding the players accountable. The
not-so-hilarious part of it is putting up with comments from baseball fans about doping in cycling
when it hits the news, while there is no system in place to check on a Barry Bonds.

OTOH, other than an excuse to sit in the bleachers and drink overpriced beer, I don't understand
much else about baseball, anyhow. You'd think as a CPA I could at least find some interest in the
incredible level of arcane statistics they compile and use to fill the dead air that normal humans
use to get up and get beer.

I was really into baseball from the late 1950s to late 60s. I saw Mantle, Maris, etc. play live at
Yankee Stadium. When I next watched baseball in the early 1990s, I was amazed at how the bats
looked like toothpicks in the hands of the better hitters. Totally unnatural.

More and more of the non-playing time is used for advertising. The old Ballentine, Rhinegold,
Schaffer, etc. ads hardly seemed a real interruption by comparison. And there were some great tv
announcers, although I could never get to like Mel Allen. Scooter was always more fun across town.

Omit the across town reference. The memory fades.
