  1. Is there some kind of attachment that sticks outward from the bar? I'm
thinking of something that provides a grip such that your arms are in
the same position as when doing hammer curls, ie: a double Tiget Woods
fist-clench. I find the traditional position to produce a lot of upper
back tension, and I also feel it's unnatural to be putting my neck in
such a position behind my body while lifting a lot of weight, compared
to in front of my body. I know I'm going to be royally flamed by now
anyway, so I'll also say that I'm surprised that some sort of more
ergonomically shaped bar hasn't come into wider use.

I saw some sort of attachment like this advertised here not long ago,
so maybe someone could point me to that, or else the general name for
it because as I remember it was incredibly expensive.

    Get 2 vice grips.

What's the problem with that? Tightening these muscles and others
    provide needed stability.

Do you really mean your neck or what?

Have you looked at the Manta Ray?

    harness)

It also sounds like your form needs work.....but others will flame you for
    that....

I put my hands all the way out to the ends of the bar near the
weights. If the weight hurts your upper back, use a pad. If you
have access to a machine pec dec, use it to stretch your arms
    back.

Here's a list of squats you can try:
    http://tinyurl.com/dvtaj

Don't substitute exercises you *think* will replace the squat,
like stiffed-legged deadlifts and leg press; they aren't the
same thing. Even the deadlift, an excellent exercise, doesn't
replace the squat. Do the squat AND deads.

Either get a safety squat bar from new yourk barbells or an attachment from
    Dave Draper called top squat.
