Following on from my recent post about replacing my wheels I found I'd
a bit of time to spare so pulled the bearings apart. As expected
several of the balls were completely mashed and there were lots of
little bits of metal in there.
However, the cones seemed absolutely fine so I removed the worst balls
and as I had no spares I rebuilt the hub with just 7 out of 9 balls on
each side. Ran as sweet as a nut! I've since bought some new balls for
the princley sum of 2 quid and brought them back up to their full
complement, and I'm dead chuffed I didn't just assume the worst and
replace the whole thing just yet. There's something to be said for
old-tech non-sealed parts.

trouble later on - the old ones are likely to be different sizes (worn
more, different batch, etc), thus transferring most of the wear onto a
smaller number of balls. You should replace all the balls at once, and
the new ones should be from the same packet.R.
