In contrast I saw an interview with Mark Walters who mentioned the
Navigators a zillion times in a pretty normal-sounding way.

Interestingly, Walters kept going on about how they rode a good race
but you can't win them all (which is true) but the local sportscaster
(Scott Clark?) showed he understands sports (even if not so much about
bike racing) by saying "Walters may say he's not upset, but that look
back he gave [to see where his sprinter had gone -- Nothstein lost the
wheel] said it all."

When taken out of context, that quote does in fact NOT mention the
current team sponsor. But, you shouldn't assume that just because
Velonews didn't post anything regarding Healthnet that Gord didn't say
anything about Healthnet. If you didn't see/hear the entire
interview, you can't be sure what was/was not said.

That is pretty much what I thought you would say. The idea in sound
bites is to never repeat/say anything you wouldn't want on tape. So
you avoid the negatives, overstate the obvious, basically you don't
provide the media with anything that can be taken out of context. He
could have said 50 other things about that team that he rides for now,
but they chose to take that. It shows a lack of professionalism.
