  1. Hi,

I have a question which is related to a nutrition during cycling. Before my last bicycle trip, I had a stomach problem. So I decided to eat only bread during the trip. I didn't eat any protein at all. The trip lasted about 7 hours and was 170 km long. My legs started to hurt after 100 km. I have never experienced such a strong hurting before. I do trips about 200 km quite often. Never had any problem with my legs and with regeneration. Since that trip, my leg muscles and knees are hurting during cycling. Do you think that it was caused by the nutrition? What should I do now to regenerate?

    Thank you for your answers.

    Karel

  2. 7 Hours is a long time to bike with only bread for fuel. If changing to bread only was the big change, and you have done several in the 200km range before, it is almost surely the cause.

Here is a nice video on causes of muscular failure from Dave Scott (6 time ironman champion).

At first he talks about hydration, then glycogen, then protein (and although he left protein for last, at the distance you are going, it is still very important to get some).

To regenerate from here, just take it a bit easier for a week or two, eat normal, and your body will take care of it.

    Happy trails!
